becoming a tea person & more on (A)Spera

by upinthetree

for as long as i can remember, i have wanted to be a tea person. coffee is great. especially coffee at my friend jamie’s house; made in a french press, served in adorable mugs, with sweet little snacks and HONEY (i love HONEY in coffee!!!) and well, its just great at jamie’s! and so novel! and sweet! but generally, coffee makes me feel rushed and important and whatever, im just over coffee. i want to be a tea connoisseur. yes. oh look how beautiful it is. all brownish greenish sometimes reddish or even totally clear with cute little flowers and leaves. now, i know it isnt usually served with foliage but wouldnt that be grand?! anyway, tonight i drank a full pot of some sort of loose strawberry tea from the local tea house. i brewed it in my very own personal brew pot and drank the whole thing. i either make it too strong or too weak. tonight, i think it was too strong. ill have to check with my friend who works at aforementioned tea house on brew times. anyhow, after that full pot, i had another cup of yogi peach detox, which i have been drinking for years (especially during my health-nut-get-everything-out-of-me-phase). so thats a lot of tea for a nontea drinker and im gonna keep on going! tea tea tea! tomorrow i will drink tea, but uhm…not before my-ahem-morning cup of coffee ( 😀 )
so a bit more on the mirah (a)spera album. right now im listening to it for about the third time through. i was very judgemental on my first and second time through and as i read through the little notes i jotted down, im feeling a little different.
the album starts off with violins on “generosity”. if there is something i love, it is stringed instruments. (i absolutely adore violins and cellos and harps and uh-duh: guitars). so it was too my delight that the album opens with violins! the next track, “the world is falling”, has an urgency about it with the mostly constant layered “ooo’s” in the background, the quiet guitar and steady drum beat. “shells” is most likely lead with a harp, which, im sure purposely, sounds much like the ocean. in the middle of the album, she lost me a little- at least at first- now on my third listen, im warming up to tracks like “the forest” (despite mirah sounding somewhat like tegan&sara). and finally, the album ends with “while we have the sun”. i absolutely love this song. the whole album seems to have this theme of embracing suffering in order to strength ourselves. it also carries an outstanding message of hope. what is insanely strange about these concepts is that they are SO biblical. over and over again, the bible tells christians to embrace suffering as through it we will become more like Christ as we learn to cling to Him. and the Gospel is ALL ABOUT HOPE! i often assign biblical themes to music that probably does not have any (on purpose, at least). ill refrain from any judgements on mirah though because WHO KNOWS?!?!
i leave you with the lyrics from “while we have the sun”
Let’s take the time to walk together while we have the sun
You never know when temperamental weather’s gonna come
And if you want to face the death you’re never that far from
Just take a breath and sing to it when all the day is done
So sorry about all the sorrow in your life you’ll know
It’s true that all the ones you love will someday have to go
And everytime you say goodbye you’ll hear the trumpets blow
A serenade to the soul, all surrounded by the glow
If you feel all broken ’cause i left you there too soon
Just know that it’s not up to you to make the flowers wilt or bloom
And if you think you’re lonely then just listen for the tune
Of all the stars i left for you in the chest of the moon
If you want to shake whatever separates you from
The holiness you want to make your life on earth become
Live your life with a compassion you can be proud of
Then let your last breath fade away with dignity and love
Let’s take the time to walk together while we have the sun
You never know when temperamental weather’s gonna come
And if you want to face the death you’re never that far from
Just take a breath and sing to it when all the day is done
